Becoming a PA
What is a Personal Assistant (PA)?
A Personal Assistant provides one‑to‑one support to help someone live independently, either at home or in the community.
This guide is for people who want to be, or are already working as, a personal assistant. It explains more about the role, why it’s a great job, and how you can find work. It also has useful information about what to expect when you first start and what learning and development you could do.
Is being a PA the same as working for a care provider?
No. As a PA, you usually work directly for one person or family. This means the role is more personalised and often more flexible than working for a care agency.
How much do Personal Assistants get paid in North Tyneside?
The exact pay depends on the role, responsibilities and the person you are supporting, as each employer using Direct Payments can set their own rate within available funding. Job listings will always show the hourly rate so you can decide if a role is right for you.
What should I expect from the role?

What if things go wrong?
If an employment related dispute or disagreement arises the first thing to do is to be honest, open and discuss it directly with the person you work with. Maybe they are not aware there is a problem or there has been a misunderstanding. However, if this does not address the issue, you may have additional concerns, or feel you have been treated unfairly, seek advice from your liability insurer about what to do next.
